EPCs have been introduced to comply with European
Directive 2002/91/EC on energy efficiency. The

An EPC gives details of the energy efficiency of a
building with recommendations for improvement.
There is no duty to take action to improve the energy
rating.
Current Requirements: It is a statutory requirement that all residential property
on the market for sale or due to complete after 30 June 2008 have a valid EPC.

Exemptions:
These include: places of worship, certain temporary buildings, industrial sites, workshops, some agricultural buildings, where it can be proved a building is to be demolished, and stand alone buildings not used for a dwelling less than 50m².
Display Energy Certificates:
Display Energy Certificates are required for a building with a useful floor area over 1000m² occupied by Public Bodies or institutions providing public services for a large number of persons (valid for 12 months).
